The March Big Idea: All About That Data

I’m not sure Meghan Trainor would have found quite the same widespread success if her song was ‘All About That Data,’ but it would have found a lot of fans in business, as the advent of big data, powerful analytics and the promise of ‘answers to anything’ have turned everyone into worshippers of data.

Of course, the events industry isn’t immune, and everyone I speak with is talking about the importance of data. Eventbrite has long been a believer in the power of data, making it open and accessible to organisers since the beginning, with the analytics dashboard growing more powerful all the time.

But data is only the first step, and even analytics doesn’t provide answers by itself. What your event needs is an insight champion. Someone who can understand data by applying focused analytics where the results tell a story, and then translate that into an actual plan of action.

That story and resulting plan should provide your events – and your team – with the insights and direction needed to help your future events perform better, grow faster and cater more closely to your audiences’ needs.

So the big idea for this month, as we move into spring and January’s event plan already starts looking a bit dated, is this: don’t get lost in the data frenzy, but pick one area you’d like to improve on, and then use the appropriate data, analytical framework and analysis to provide you with real insights that you can actually use to improve your business.

Organisers don’t need data, they need insights on how they can improve their events

Event Themes to Embrace in March

March sees the advent of spring. The nights finally grow shorter and the days longer, everything begins to rejuvenate again, and so it should be for your spring events.

How female friendly are your events? March is Women’s History Month, while March 8th is International Women’s Day and in the UK, March 15th is Mothers’ Day. It therefore seems like the perfect time to consider how female friendly your events are. Is your speaker line-up representative? Can you offer childcare or bugger access? Does the language you use sound open and inviting for both men and women? Given half the world is female, not only is it the right thing to do, but making your events more female friendly makes business sense too!

Don’t worry, be happy! March 20th is the International Day of Happiness. However why not try and make every day a happy one for your attendees? Whether you go above and beyond in your customer service, throw in a little extra surprise or just ensure you exceed expectations, you’ll always be a long-term winner by ensuring your guests are happy.

Food for thought: March is full of tasty ‘food days’ you’ll want to incorporate into your next event. Even the humble ‘potato chip’ (i.e. crisps) has its own day, on March 14th, so why not full up those party bowls full of crisps (and don’t forget the dip!)

March 14th also sees the start of Chocolate Chip Cookie week…yes, you read that right, a whole delicious week dedicated to chocolate chip cookies! If you’re feeling a little health conscious, then you can purify your body by celebrating ‘water day’ on March 22nd. Finally, the perfect ‘food day’ for networking events, March 28th is ‘Something on a stick day’ – finally, no more sticky fingers!
