Encompass auto insurance coverage

When you're shopping for car insurance coverage, it's important to understand what car insurance coverage you want and what you’re required to buy. For instance, most states require a minimum amount of car insurance to drive a vehicle. Alternatively, if you want extra protection, you may be interested in full coverage insurance. Read about the most common types of car insurance coverage to see how they work.

Encompass offers typical auto policies and coverage options, as well as combined insurance policies that include coverage for your car, home and possessions. These “EncompassOne” policies come in three levels of coverage: special, deluxe and elite — just like its stand-alone policies. Available coverage varies by state.

Special

The entry-level special policy package includes the basics, with the option to add these extras for an additional cost:

  • New car replacement, which covers the cost of a new car in the same make and model if your vehicle is totaled or stolen. Generally, an insurer will pay only for the actual cash value of your car at the time of the accident or theft.

  • Electronic equipment coverage, which pays for the loss of any electronic equipment that is permanently installed in your car, in addition to items used with the equipment, such as CDs. You must have comprehensive insurance to qualify for this coverage.

  • Gap coverage, which pays the difference between the actual cash value of a car and the amount you owe on your car loan or lease if your vehicle is totaled or stolen. You must have comprehensive and collision coverage to get this endorsement.

Deluxe

The mid-tier deluxe package automatically includes electronic equipment coverage, windshield repair coverage with no deductible and forgiveness of your first accident.

You can also add rental reimbursement coverage, new car replacement, gap coverage or auto trip interruption. If you can’t use your vehicle when you’re 100 miles or more from home, auto trip interruption will cover certain related expenses.

Elite

Encompass’ elite package includes all of the benefits above except for new car replacement and gap coverage, which are optional add-ons. The elite package also includes:

Encompass’ elite package includes all of the benefits above except for new car replacement and gap coverage, which are optional add-ons. The elite package also includes:

  • Unlimited accident forgiveness. Accidents won’t raise your rates, even if you have more than one at-fault crash.

  • Company car protection. You’ll be covered by an elite policy even if you’re driving your company car.

  • Safe driving bonus. If no one on your auto policy has an at-fault accident in the past year, you’ll earn up to 5% off your next policy premium.

Encompass homeowners insurance coverage

As with its auto insurance, Encompass offers standard homeowners insurance through three packages. You can buy these policies as stand-alone homeowners policies or in one combined policy that covers your car, home and possessions.

Special

Encompass’ special package includes standard homeowners coverage, plus:

  • Jewelry and fur. This add-on includes up to $1,500 of coverage for your jewelry and fur, including coverage for theft.

  • Homeowners association fees, which pays up to $1,000 in HOA fees to cover your share of property loss in your neighborhood.

  • Landscape and land restoration, which pays for land restoration or to replace your lawn, shrubs or trees if they’re damaged by a covered disaster.

  • Burglary or theft recovery. If someone breaks in or damages your home, this coverage will pay the reward money (10% of the loss up to $1,000) for any information about the incident.

You may also add additional features for a price, including:

  • Increased building costs. This extra covers any additional reconstruction costs you may have because of a building code change.

  • Replacement cost. If the cost to rebuild your home after a covered event is more than the original insured amount, this add-on will make up the difference.

  • Covered losses for structure and contents. With a standard homeowners policy, your possessions are covered only for disasters listed in the policy. This option broadens the scope of coverage for your belongings.

  • Lifestyle endorsement. This package extends additional coverage to family members in health care facilities, reduces the deductible for damaged sports equipment and adds other perks.

  • Umbrella insurance, which provides extra liability coverage if you’re sued for damages above your auto, home or other policies.

  • Enhanced home business supplement, which offers liability and property coverage for those running a business out of their home.

  • Identity fraud expense coverage, which covers expenses due to identity fraud, including lost wages and attorney fees, up to $20,000.

  • Boat and watercraft coverage, which protects watercraft including boats, jets, powerboats, sailboats and yachts.

Deluxe

Encompass’ mid-tier deluxe package includes all of the benefits of the special package. It also includes increased building costs, replacement cost and covered losses for structure and contents. (The other optional coverage types listed in the special package are still available for a fee.)

In addition, the deluxe package includes coverage for:

  • Water backup, which covers damage from backed up water or sump pump overflow.

  • 200% property location limit, which includes coverage for your house, other structures and belongings up to 200% of your home’s value. This coverage allows you to allocate your limit as you see fit. (Most policies have separate limits for your home and belongings.)

  • Walk-away coverage, which pays the estimated value for your home if it is destroyed due to an event covered by your policy and you choose not to rebuild.

  • Mortgage rate protection. If your home is destroyed due to a covered loss and you buy a new house that requires a higher mortgage, this coverage pays up to $20,000 for increased expenses, including acquisition fees and closing costs.

  • Jewelry and fur coverage up to $5,000, including coverage for theft or loss.

  • Homeowners association fees coverage in higher limits than the special package. This extra pays up to $5,000 in HOA fees to cover your share of property damage in your community.

Elite

Encompass’ top-tier elite package includes all of the features from the deluxe package, often at a higher limit. It also includes:

  • Lock replacement. This extra pays to have your home's locks replaced with no deductible if your keys are lost or stolen.

  • Fine art, which includes coverage to replace glass protecting your fine art, in addition to any broken porcelain statuary or other fragile art.

  • Identity fraud expense coverage up to $20,000.

  • Jewelry and fur (higher limit than the deluxe package). This add-on includes up to $10,000 of coverage for your jewelry and fur, including if your items are lost or stolen.

  • Homeowners association fees (higher limit than the deluxe package). This extra pays up to $50,000 in HOA fees to cover your share of damage in your community due to a disaster.

  • Personal injury protection, which pays out if you are sued for libel or slander.

Elite policyholders can add the lifestyle endorsement, umbrella insurance, boat and watercraft coverage, or enhanced home business supplement for an extra cost.

Methodology

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2019-2021. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.

Auto insurance ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s auto insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints and discounts. Our “ease of use” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. Using our editorial discretion, we also consider customer satisfaction surveys. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews.
