How we review auto insurance companies

Mapfre auto insurance coverage
When you're shopping for car insurance coverage, it's important to understand what car insurance coverage you want and what you’re required to buy. For instance, most states require a minimum amount of car insurance to drive a vehicle. Alternatively, if you want extra protection, you may be interested in full coverage insurance. Read about the most common types of car insurance coverage to see how they work.

Mapfre offers all the standard coverage types, including liability and other state-required coverage, towing and rental car coverage, and comprehensive and collision insurance.

The company also offers several add-on options, including:

Disappearing deductible. By staying claim-free, you can earn credits to lower the deductible on your collision coverage. You'll earn a $50 credit for your first claim-free year and up to $300 in credits if you continue to be claim-free for more than five years.

Accident forgiveness. With this add-on, your first at-fault accident won’t make your premium go up.

The AutoMaster package, available in some states where Mapfre operates, bundles new car replacement insurance with several add-on coverage types, including laptop and cell phone replacement. Details of the AutoMaster package can differ by state.

Pricing based on tracked driving habits
Mapfre offers DriveAdvisor, a voluntary program that monitors your driving habits through a phone app. You get a discount when you sign up and get started, and you can earn a discount for safe driving behavior.

Mapfre home insurance coverage
Like other homeowners insurance policies, coverage from Mapfre will pay out if your property is damaged by fire, storms, lightning, falling trees or other objects, theft or vandalism.

You can also buy add-ons to cover more situations:

Replacement cost coverage will pay what’s needed to replace your home if your policy’s limit is too low to cover the full cost.

Water and sewer backup will pay for repairs due to flooding or other damage if service lines break. This isn’t typically covered by standard policies.

Home systems protection will pay for the failure of equipment like your furnace, air conditioner or built-in appliances.

Home restoration program will expedite the process of returning your home to its previous condition after a covered incident; this includes clean-up of damage from water, fire, smoke and biohazards.

Extra coverage for valuable items like furs, jewelry and silverware is available.

Fraud protection pays if you’re a victim of forgery or counterfeit money.

Personal injury liability helps cover costs associated with issues like libel, slander, wrongful entry and false arrest.

Special personal property coverage broadens your standard homeowners insurance by covering more ways your belongings might be damaged or lost.

The Premier Living package bundles many of these add-ons with several others, including coverage for identity theft, additional living expenses while your home is being repaired and the cost to bring damaged property up to current building codes if local laws have changed.

Methodology
Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2019-2021. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.

Auto insurance ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s auto insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints and discounts. Our “ease of use” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. Using our editorial discretion, we also consider customer satisfaction surveys. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews.
