Travelers renters insurance coverage
Landlords sometimes require tenants to purchase a policy with a minimum amount of renters liability insurance, but otherwise, the coverage you choose is generally up to you. Below are the four types of coverage included in most standard renters policies:

Type of coverage

What it does

Personal property

Covers your clothing, furniture, electronics and other belongings.

Loss of use

Pays for hotel stays, restaurant meals or other expenses if you have to live elsewhere while your home undergoes covered repairs.

Liability

Pays out if you're responsible for injuries to other people or damage to their property.

Medical payments

Covers injuries to other people in your home, regardless of fault.

For more details, see What Does Renters Insurance Cover?

Besides the standard coverage above, Travelers renters insurance also includes housing improvements coverage. That means if your landlord has let you make alterations or upgrades to your unit, these will be covered in case of theft or disaster, up to 10% of your personal property limit. (Higher limits are available for an extra cost.)

Optional coverage you can add to your policy includes:

Replacement cost value. This upgrade to your personal property coverage means that if your belongings are stolen or destroyed, Travelers will reimburse enough for you to buy brand-new replacements, rather than paying you only for the current cash value of the items.

Valuable items coverage. Pricey belongings such as an engagement ring or a musical instrument may not be adequately insured by your normal policy limits, so you can add extra coverage as needed. An appraisal isn’t required.

Identity fraud protection. Travelers will reimburse you up to $25,000 if someone steals your identity. You can use it to pay for legal fees, lost wages and other expenses.

METHODOLOGY
Renters insurance ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s renters insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints, coverage options, discounts and online experience. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our full renters insurance rating methodology.

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2019-2021. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.
