About Shelter
Shelter began as the Missouri Farmers Association in 1917, when farmers needed access to reliable insurance protection at prices they could afford. The MFA Mutual Insurance Company began operations in 1946, with seven employees and a $100,000 loan from the Missouri Farmers Association. In seven years, MFA Mutual was the largest mutual casualty insurance company in Missouri.

Shelter was founded in 1946 as the insurance subsidiary of the Missouri Farmers Association (the same company as MFA Incorporated), and was called M.F.A. Insurance. The Shelter name came from the company’s most famous slogan, “M.F.A is your Shield of Shelter”. In 1981, the name was changed to Shelter Insurance. The company’s headquarters remained in Columbia. The Shelter Insurance Gardens are located at the company headquarters in Columbia.
