“Mmmm…Donuts.” A phrase well known to us all thanks to the doughnut-loving Homer Simpson. It’s an all encompassing phrase that really does best describe the feeling of euphoria whilst chomping down a doughnut.
For National Doughnut Week, we thought it was our duty to find you some of the best doughnuts in London. They come in all shapes and sizes but they all end with that mmm…donut feeling.
1.Dum Dums Donutterie (Boxpark, Shoreditch)
Boxpark is notorious for having different companies come and go from their container stores, well this is one shop people won’t want to see go in a hurry! The array of doughnuts is overwhelming (in a good way of course!) From their best selling Zebra Cronut to the Peter Andre’s Yum Yum Dum Dum, there is a doughnut for everyone. These doughnuts must be great as they turned someone who disliked doughnuts into a manager of Dum Dums, a doughnut convert, a born again doughnut lover!
2.Crosstown Doughnuts (Soho/ Piccadilly)
When you walk in to Crosstown and see the way the doughnuts are displayed, you could be forgiven for thinking each of these doughnuts was cared for and treated with nothing but respect. They’re not just piled on top of each other, trying to get as many on display as possible, but are uniformly positioned to show off the immaculate detail added to each doughnut. And the taste? Trying the creme brûlée doughnut was out of this world. You’ll want to take your time eating these babies!
3. St John (Smithfield/Spitalfields/Maltby Street/Druid Street/Selfridges)
Said to be the bringer of the posh doughnut to the capital, St John’s offer many types of doughnut filling including butterscotch, vanilla custard, chocolate, lemon curd, seasonal jam & coffee & pistachio praline. What a choice! They may not look like the most exciting of doughnuts but it’s no thrills exterior is made up by the extremely well crafted interior filling. You’ll never be able to eat a custard doughnut off the hight street again after eating one of these decadent doughnuts.
4.Bea’s of Bloomsbury (Bloomsbury/Farringdon/St Paul’s)
“This doesn’t look like a doughnut!” I hear you scream and you are right. This is a Bea’s of Bloomsbury’s famous Duffin. It’s part doughnut, part muffin, wholly scrumptious and comes filled with either jam or Nutella.
How did this crossbreed of deliciously doughy snack came about? I’m not sure we could handle the truth. All you really need to know is these bad boys fly off the shelf, so you’ll need to get down there early to grab one.
5. Wahaca (Multiple Locations)
Another anomaly? Nope! We’re just broadening your horizons of the doughnut world and introducing you to the Mexican doughnut, the churro. Crunchy on the outside, doughy goodness on the inside, covered in cinnamon sugar and accompanied with either a rich chocolate sauce or sweet dolche de leche, both served hot. It wouldn’t surprised me if people went to Wahaca to dive straight in to this tasty dessert, but we’d suggested holding your horses and try one of there many fresh and authentic Mexican dishes.
If we’ve got you in the mood for baking and creating, then you’re in luck! There are loads of upcoming events to help you learn how to one day create some of the master pieces above!
