The April Big Idea: Benchmark your way to success

April will see us publish the first annual ‘Pulse Report: Event Industry Insights.’ In it you will be able to see the results of a survey taken by over 500 event professionals, helping to chart key trends, budgets and benchmarks for the industry.

So why are benchmarks important? Last month we talked about data, but benchmarks are more than just data. They provide a target, they give context to where you currently stand and they motivate you as you start to see incremental improvements.

For example you know you spent £1,000 marketing your last event, and you made £10,000. That’s data. What it doesn’t tell you is how well you performed relative to others. Did you overspend or underspend on your marketing? For that investment should expect higher revenues, or were you in the top 10%?

These questions can only be answered by benchmarks, and if you find you are doing less well than comparative events, you can set a target to improve.

This is the power of benchmarks, and we’ll be diving into plenty of them this month.

Event themes to embrace in April

March sees the advent of spring. The nights finally grow shorter and the days longer, everything begins to rejuvenate again, and so it should be for your spring events.

Easter: It’s almost upon us already! Good Friday is April 3rd and Easter Monday is the 6th so that means this weekend much of the UK will be enjoying a long bank holiday weekend. For those of you hosting events, Easter gives you plenty of themes to pick from. From religion to bunny rabbit; eggs to chocolate we’re sure you can find an Easter theme to work into your events over the weekend.

World Health Day: Tuesday 7th April sees World Health Day and so for any events falling then, it would be great to incorporate some kind of health awareness activity into the programme. Whether some gentle exorcise or healthier food choices, you could help spread the message of healthier living at your event.
