We recently had the pleasure of talking with Holly Mitchell, Campaign Manager for #GivingTuesday UK about their mission to spread the message of giving in a consumption-heavy world, and the role events are playing in spreading the word here in the UK.

What is #GivingTuesday and what are its main aims?

#GivingTuesday (2nd December) is a global day of giving. After the sales of Black Friday and the online shopping boom on Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is an opportunity to come together to show the world why it’s good to give. Whether it’s making a donation, volunteering your time or just spreading the word at the start of the Christmas shopping season, #GivingTuesday is a call to action for everyone who wants to give something back. The aim of #GivingTuesday is to involve the whole nation in the act of giving.

How do events play a role in achieving those aims?

Events play a massive role in helping to spread the word about #GivingTuesday across the whole country. They help bring together charities, businesses, media, student groups and more. The real value in bringing people together is for them to see what is possible through partnership. #GivingTuesday is a collaborative movement and these events allow collaboration to flourish!

How is Eventbrite supporting #GivingTuesday to achieve your goals?

Eventbrite has been brilliant in allowing us to effectively manage our regional roadshow. Knowing how many people are registered to attend (and where they are from) means we can target events with lower audiences and try to boost numbers. The fact that people can register for free is a big bonus for us as a new campaign, it is important to make the process as easy as possible!

What can people expect from attending a #GivingTuesday event?

Lots! Background information on what #GivingTuesday is, examples of what they can do and practical information on how to get involved. But it also provides an opportunity to hear from other local organisations why they have signed up and a chance to chat to others who are locally based and test out and exchange ideas.

One of the questions we get at Eventbrite the most is how to promote your event and reach a bigger audience. How do you build your community? Any tips you’d suggest for reaching a bigger audience?

What we have started to find is that our partners have been spreading the word for us. They have been promoting our events on their own social media and through their own networks which has allowed us to reach a bigger audience than we would on our own. If you can engage others to spread the word for you it can really grow your community.
