About EmblemHealth

Emblem came into being in 2006 when Group Health Incorporated (GHI) and the Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York (HIP) merged.

In 1999, looking to expand their reach, GHI established GHI HMO as an incorporated entity in New York State and also acquired certain assets of Well Care Management Group, Inc. in the same year. In 2005, GHI Select HMO acquired the assets, of ABC Health Plans and in 2006, merged with Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York (HIP) to form Emblem.

In 1943, New York City mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and David M. Heyman brought together a number of people to explore offering pre-paid medical services to New Yorkers of “moderate means.” This led to the creation of HIP in 1994 which served as the first health insurance plan for public service workers in New York City.

In 2012, EmblemHealth started its Neighborhood Care program which established a community presence in its service area with care coordination and wellness programs.

Neighborhood Care facilities are now located in Harlem, Cambria Heights, Queens, Chinatown and Crown Heights.
